Why 14.313 briefly became a dumping ground.

For a while the frequency was reigned by a guy in the Vancouver, BC that some said was bipolar. Anyway he was a pain in the s$$ and I've actually made a rather nice QSO with him and he bent my ear about how the troublemaker was some guy in Michigan and if I recall correctly he gave me his callsign. Anyway, I found out that someone in Michigan had been clouted with a five figure fine by the FCC.

Still, everyone knew who he was and recognized his voice. He would often fill the airwaves with profanity and general vileness which we ignored. However when he started making death wishes to American troops and said things about dead GIs that crossed the line.

Looking back on it I assume the GIs at Ft Lewis, WA didn't hear about it. Few GIs are hams and those that are and live on post can't just grab a military set and go on the air when they want to.

Had the GIs at Ft Lewis heard about it it's pretty likely that a trio or quartet of angry privates would have taken a weekend in Canada to take care of a little business. It doesn't take much to cripple a radio station and with a fast getaway and 2 cases of Molson's to take in the trunk to take home as their excuse for their visit they likely would have gotten away with it.

Incidentally it's a federal offense to vandalize a licensed radio station. Pirates stations don't get that protection. If they get vandalized the smartest thing they can do is take the hit and shut up about it because by reporting they would likely de facto be confessing to running and unlicensed radio station and the fines could be pretty stiff.

He's long gone now, at least I have not heard him in quite some time.

Every now and then a situation like that turns into mischief and someone gets the bright idea to do something about it. I got an email invitation to join in the gala festivities but bowed out citing work responsibilities. However on the appointed night I managed to listen to the circus at work on NA5B, some kind of on line receiver. Check it out sometime. I was also made privy the the online 'mission control'

I'm a retired sailor and was offshore that evening and it was a quiet evening watch.

What happened that night was hilarious.

Someone at the appointed time came on the air and read a pretty generic net preamble and called for check-ins. The pileup was pretty heavy and one by one he fielded the check-ins. When the pileup slowed down more check-ins appeared. In short order I estimated about fifty check-ins and as I listened carefully I realized that the guys that already checked in were changing their voices and/or accents and checking in again and again. They were using their proper callsigns but with different accents and voice changes.

It was like and old western where the Indians would walk past a hole in the trees, sneak back and walk past the hole in the trees to give the beleaguered settlers hiding out in Fort Whatsitsname the idea that there were more of them than they actually were.

My best guess is that there were about 20 hams involved and none of them were doing anything illegal.

Then somebody started posting the net on the clusters and the clusters lit up. The comments were funny. One said 'They're taking back 14.313!' Another said "Check out 14.313.' and then things really started taking off. I knew several of the hams involved and they were all running barefoot. When it hit the clusters some of the big guns with power joined in.

The guy running net control was pretty slick. He handed off net control to someone else running pretty serious power and one by one the originals dropped out and listened. It was hilarious.

While it didn't get the Canadian station to cease operations, it was noted that he behaved himself a little better afterwards.

Actually this happened about a decade ago and I haven't heard from him in years.

Things like this come and go in ham radio. It's rare but it does happen.

As for me, I had an entertaining night at work as the boat chugged up the coast to New York.

If you don't believe me Google "What happened to Karol on 14.313?"

Before I published this I asked in a forum about if he's still up to his antics and someone says occasionally he makes a drug induced rant but it seems to be pretty rare.

I also asked around and long before that the frequency had a reputation that went back for years. It's supposedly settled down lately.
